MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WDNews) — Gov. Kay Ivey is encouraging Alabama students to pick up a book as Read Across America Week approaches.

In a video message shared ahead of the national celebration, Ivey urged young people across the state to embrace the power of reading, saying every big dream starts with learning — and learning starts with reading.

Speaking from her office at the Alabama State Capitol, Ivey quoted author Dr. Seuss, saying, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

Ivey told students that a love of learning, a strong education and hard work can open doors and create opportunities beyond what they may imagine.

With the nation preparing to mark its 250th birthday, the governor also encouraged students to read about America’s history, the freedoms Americans value and the leaders who helped shape the country.

Read Across America Week is held annually to promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading among children nationwide.
