Rehobeth, Ala. (WDNews) — The Town of Rehobeth is mourning the loss of former Mayor Joe P. Collins, a longtime public servant credited with helping shape the community into what it is today.

According to town officials, Collins passed away in late March, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades of service and leadership.

Collins played a key role in establishing the town’s government, serving as chairman of the Incorporation of Rehobeth and helping guide the process that led to the town’s official incorporation in 1996. That same year, he was elected as the town’s first mayor.

He went on to serve more than 18 years in the role, overseeing a period of growth and development for the community.

Officials said one of the most defining moments of his leadership came during a devastating tornado that caused significant damage in Rehobeth, including Town Hall. During that time, Collins worked alongside staff, council members, and neighboring communities to help coordinate recovery efforts and restore stability for residents.

Current Mayor Kimberly Trotter reflected on Collins’ impact in a statement.

“Mayor Collins gave this town something that can never be taken away, a foundation built on hard work and genuine love for this community,” said Mayor Trotter. “He didn’t just serve Rehobeth, he helped create it, and everything we accomplish today stands on the shoulders of his dedication. On behalf of the Town Council and the entire Rehobeth community, we are deeply grateful for his years of service and the impact he has had on our area.”

Town leaders said Collins believed strongly in community values and often spoke about the importance of character alongside growth.

The Town of Rehobeth has extended condolences to the Collins family. Flags at Town Hall will be lowered in his honor.
