CLIO, Ala. (WDNews) — Three individuals were arrested after authorities say they attempted to smuggle drugs, cell phones and other prohibited items into Easterling Correctional Facility in Barbour County.
According to officials, the investigation began June 22, 2026, after the facility’s K-9 unit received a report of two individuals carrying backpacks on prison property without authorization.
Correctional officers responded and conducted a search of the area, resulting in the arrest of one suspect. During the investigation, the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office located and arrested a second individual identified as the driver connected to the incident. Authorities later located and arrested a third suspect.
Officials identified the suspects as Keyona Nicole Smith, Elston Howard Smith and Jaderrius Rayshaun Garland. All three were booked into the Barbour County Jail.
Each suspect was charged with first-degree promoting prison contraband, second-degree promoting prison contraband, first-degree possession of marijuana and drug trafficking.
During the investigation, authorities seized approximately 6 grams of a fentanyl and cocaine mixture, 9 ounces of marijuana, a digital scale, 15 cell phones, a pair of wireless earbuds, 17 USB charging cables, 10 charging blocks, two folding knives, 5 pounds of tobacco, 30 packs of cigarettes and 200 Black & Mild cigars.
Authorities have not released additional information regarding the intended recipients of the contraband or whether additional arrests are expected. The investigation remains ongoing.
