Dothan, Al. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily News sat down with Clay Dempsey, Performing Arts Director for the Dothan Civic Center and the City of Dothan, to discuss a recent trip focused on the future of the city’s entertainment facilities.
Dempsey and city leaders traveled to Reno and Lake Tahoe to tour arena venues as conversations continue about the possibility of replacing the current Civic Center with a new, modern arena. After visiting multiple sites over the past year, including venues in North Carolina, Dempsey said this latest trip provided clarity on what Dothan needs long term.
The proposed concept includes a flexible, multipurpose arena with up to 5,000 seats, movable staging, improved artist accommodations, and enhanced guest experience. Dempsey emphasized that bigger does not always mean better, noting that right-sizing the venue would allow for stronger attendance, diverse events, and long-term sustainability.
While timelines remain tentative, discussions are expected to intensify, with potential construction beginning next year and completion possibly by 2030.
