Dothan, Al. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily News sat down with Melissa, county director for Dale County with Alabama Extension, to talk about the many programs the organization offers and an upcoming event for local farmers. Alabama Extension works in every county across the state, providing research-backed information and education in agriculture, health and nutrition, youth development, community development, and economic growth.

Many people associate Extension only with farming, but Melissa explained that their work also includes 4-H programs, food safety certifications, animal programs, crop education, pesticide management, and support for local businesses and tourism. Their goal is to make reliable information accessible and free whenever possible.

Coming up next is the Alabama Extension Cotton Expo on January 22 at the National Peanut Festival Fairgrounds. The event is free to attend and will feature more than 30 vendors, a trade show, expert speakers, and a luncheon. Farmers will also have a chance to win door prizes, including seed and equipment.
