Dothan, AL. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily News met with Dr. Kirk Erickson to discuss his new book, Down Set Win, a coming-of-age football novel inspired by true events from his high school years in Central Florida.
The story follows a 16-year-old narrator and his teammates as they go from one of the worst football programs in the region to one of the most dominant through discipline, teamwork, and relentless conditioning. Erickson says the idea for the book came after reconnecting with his former coach, who encouraged him to share the remarkable turnaround story of their team.
What began as a documentary-style project eventually evolved into a fictionalized novel rooted in real-life experiences, friendships, and lessons learned on and off the field.
The book has already earned praise from ESPN sports journalists Dan Wetzel and Ivan Maisel, who say the story captures the heart of high school football and the determination it takes to win.
