Dothan, Al. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily chatted with Highlands PTO leaders Allie Pfister and Brittany Crane to learn more about the group’s work and their big Thanksgiving fundraiser.
The pair shared how Highlands, a non-Title I Dothan City school, relies heavily on PTO efforts to help provide resources and experiences that federal funding doesn’t cover.
Throughout the year, they stay busy organizing events like Popcorn Fridays, school dances, chili cook-offs and Rock Your School Day, all aimed at supporting teachers, students, and families.
This Thanksgiving morning, the PTO will host its first Turkey Trot 5K at Westgate Park near the tennis center. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m., with the race beginning at 8 and an untimed kids’ mile starting at 8:45.
Participants can register early at raceentry.com by searching the Dothan zip code. Entry is thirty dollars in advance, thirty-five on race day, and five dollars for the kids’ mile.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the school’s long-term goal of purchasing a new playground. With one hundred twenty thousand already raised toward the one hundred eighty thousand needed, the PTO hopes this race brings them even closer.
