Dothan, Al. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily News sat down with Julie Gonzalez, assistant director of the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, to talk about the rising need for food assistance and an upcoming community food drive.

The food bank operates a 22,000 square foot warehouse in Dothan, serving as the supply hub for around 150 partner agencies across Houston, Henry, Dale, Coffee, Geneva and southern Barber counties. Those agencies directly help families facing food insecurity, which affects an estimated one in six neighbors in the Wiregrass.

Recently, the government shutdown and delays in SNAP benefits have led to an increased demand for support. Gonzalez shared that while the need has grown, so has community response, with more clubs, churches and organizations hosting food drives than ever before.

One major event, Stuff the Semi, is scheduled for November 20 at McDonald’s on the north side of Ross Clark Circle, where residents can drive through and donate frozen turkeys and non-perishable items.

The food bank also welcomes volunteers and encourages families to get involved and teach compassion through giving.
