Dothan, AL. (WDNews) – Wiregrass Daily News had the pleasure of sitting down with Velvet Art Gallery owner Rachel Kurtz on how the space opens doors for emerging Wiregrass artists.
At The Velvet, newcomers can show work for free during the First Friday Art Crawl, coordinated with Art in Public Places, building portfolios and clientele. The gallery also hosts judged shows with proceeds supporting hands-on training for locals who help mount exhibitions.
Kurtz, who captains the co-ed Mystics of Luminous Mardi Gras crew, is also rallying the community for a New Year’s Eve Masquerade Midnight Ball at Windmill Station to benefit House of Ruth. With a live band and a mask contest awarding a five-foot painting, organizers hope to raise $5,000–$10,000. Tickets are on Eventbrite.
Beyond the ballroom, The Velvet partners on drives for seniors and teens in area homes. Next up, a Peanut Festival–inspired show, with artwork due Thursday, Nov. 6.
