DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — Airbnb is changing its house rules to limit cleaning chores hosts can ask guests to complete, including at rentals in the Wiregrass.

According to Airbnb, the policy applies to reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026. The booking date determines whether the new rules apply, rather than the date of the stay.

Hosts generally cannot ask guests to strip beds, take trash off the property, or wash and put away dishes. Airbnb says requests should not involve significant time or effort or work typically handled by a cleaner.

Simple requests are still allowed. According to the company, hosts can ask guests to place used dishes in the sink, gather used towels, separate trash and recycling into designated indoor bins, or turn off the air conditioning when leaving. Exceptions may be allowed for local conditions, such as drought restrictions or wildlife concerns.

House rules and requests must appear in the listing’s designated section before a guest books. Hosts cannot add new requirements afterward through messages, signs inside the home or in-person instructions.

Airbnb says continued violations could lead to warnings, a notice on the listing or reduced visibility in search results.

The changes do not eliminate cleaning fees. According to Airbnb’s guest guidelines, those fees cover routine cleaning between reservations, including laundry and vacuuming.

Guests are still expected to avoid leaving excessive messes or damage. Hosts cannot charge fees for skipped cleaning or checkout tasks, but guests may be responsible for damage or unexpected cleaning costs.

Upfront pricing is also already in place. Airbnb made total-price display standard worldwide in April 2025, showing the cost of a stay with fees included before taxes. That change is separate from the November checkout policy.
