DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — When American Legion Riders arrive at a veteran’s home with an American flag, the visit is often a surprise. But the moment belongs to the veteran, who gets to raise the flag if able.
That is the heart of the Flagpoles for Veterans program through American Legion Riders Post 1776, according to Troy Thomas.
The riders provide an American flag and, when needed, a flagpole at no cost to the veteran. Volunteers handle the installation and work with family members to plan a personal flag-raising ceremony honoring the veteran’s service.
Thomas said seeing the veteran’s face when the riders arrive is what makes the program special.
Since July, the group has held about five or six dedications, Thomas said. Behind each one is careful planning and a desire to give veterans time to enjoy the honor.
The program accepts nominations and maintains a running list based on age, health and wartime service. Older veterans receive priority, with World War II veterans moving to the top of the list.
Thomas said the goal is to honor them as soon as possible so they can enjoy their flags for as long as possible.
Sometimes, a family’s circumstances make that timing especially meaningful. Thomas said the riders recently honored a veteran whose wife was receiving hospice care, arranging the ceremony before her death.
The next dedication is scheduled for Nov. 1 for a veteran who recently suffered a heart attack, moving him higher on the list.
Before an installation, a committee checks that the veteran owns the home and that homeowners association rules or other restrictions will not prevent a flagpole from being placed in the yard. Members also contact a close family member to gather information and coordinate the surprise.
The riders volunteer their time, while fundraisers and donations help cover the costs.
“We don’t expect veterans to provide donations for doing this for them,” Thomas said.
For the riders, the ceremonies offer a chance to bring loved ones and fellow veterans together while showing that military service is remembered and appreciated.
“This is one of the things we really enjoy doing,” Thomas said.
