DOTHAN, Ala. (WDNews) — The Exchange Center for Child Abuse Prevention is reminding Wiregrass residents that free, trauma-informed counseling services are available for children and adults who have experienced traumatic events.

In a recent community outreach message, the organization emphasized that seeking help is a sign of strength and encouraged those struggling with the effects of trauma to reach out for support.

“Taking the first step can be the hardest part, but it IS okay to ask for help. Asking for help is a sign of strength NOT weakness!” the Exchange Center said.

The organization offers free counseling services in what it describes as a safe and confidential environment. Services are available for both child and adult survivors of trauma.

Childhood trauma can occur when a child or adolescent experiences or witnesses a highly threatening event, including abuse, violence, serious accidents or natural disasters. The effects can include emotional, behavioral and physical challenges, including sleep disturbances, behavioral changes, emotional withdrawal and other long-term impacts if left untreated.

The Exchange Center has served the Wiregrass since 1978 and provides a variety of programs, including parenting support, parenting education, individual trauma counseling and group therapy services.

Residents seeking assistance can contact the Exchange Center at 334-671-1966 or visit the organization’s website for more information.
